Maria Kastan

Biography
Maria Kastan shows paintings and sculpture with Binoche Fine Art.

Maria Kastan is a Filipino American raised in Brooklyn, New York. She received her MFA after studying with the late artist Lennart Anderson and the artist William T. Williams, among others. Maria continued to teach undergraduate studio art, study at Chautauqua Art Institution, and currently has her studio in Northern New York.

Maria Kastan builds oil paintings, sculpture and drawings that are held between two worlds—the figurative and the conceptual. In much of her work, she consistently reveals the female form in a quiet flux exploring themes of freedom and containment, falling and searching, or intuition and transformation. Maria Kastan builds drawings and sculpture that are reflections of her response to natural materials and foraging spirit. Recent drawings with pen and charcoal have now included ashes from fires. Her assemblage sculptures are a balance between man-made materials and natural foraged or deconstructed natural materials.

Maria Kastan has shown at the Arad Biennale, Romania, Tuscon Desert Art Museum, The Seligmann Art Center, The WAH Center and in several international galleries. She has permanent work in public collections such as the MIDAC Contemporary Art Museum, Italy, Brooklyn College CUNY Library, The Brooklyn Art Library, with a mural at Lincoln Hospital, Bronx, NY. Her work is collected by private companies and individuals globally.
